Cosmetics vs Cosmeceuticals
Let’s talk skincare, in particular cosmetics vs cosmeceuticals.
So what’s the difference?
Cosmetic products can only penetrate the outer surface of our skin so they will make your skin feel and smell nice but they physically can’t travel deep enough to create permanent changes.
Cosmeceutical products are formulated with highly active ingredients that use advanced delivery systems which allow them to pass through the outer layer of our skin into the dermis, which is where the magic happens!
Don’t know if you’re using cosmetics or cosmeceuticals?
A big clue is where these products can be purchased from.
Cosmetics are able to be purchased over the counter (supermarket, pharmacy, department stores etc) without a skin therapist or medical professionals prescription. This is because the risk of an ‘action’ on the skin is low, remember cosmetics can only penetrate the outermost layer of the skin.
A product that has the ability to penetrate or change the functioning of the skin, cosmeceutical, needs a prescription by a skin therapist or medical professional as they have the ability to create changes within the skin.
