Laser - Hair Removal
Both IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and laser can be used for hair removal. IPL treatments are useful for covering large areas eg. men’s backs, full legs and Brazilians. At Clinique Elan we are predominantly treating unwanted facial hair, under arm hair and lower legs only, so the laser is our treatment of choice. It is generally recognised as being more specific to the target, thus requiring fewer treatments. We use our CoolGlide laser for hair removal,
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The laser light targets the dark hair follicle under the surface of the skin. The beam needs to reach its target colour (brown pigment) to be absorbed and converted into heat, hence destroying the follicle itself. For this reason, fair hair and even some very fine dark hair, cannot be treated with light therapy.
Only hair in its growth phase can be destroyed by the laser light, so repeated treatments are necessary. There are variations between each of the hair bearing areas in both percentage of hair in the growth phase at one time, as well as the time period of the growth cycles themselves. This determines the frequency of treatment sessions.
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
Although often referred to as permanent hair removal, in reality it is only permanent hair reduction. In some cases, hair may start growing again after a period of time, usually years. This is managed with maintenance treatments to keep on top of the problem.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Immediately following treatment, the area is usually a little red, which can last a few hours. There may be some localised swelling around the hair follicles treated, but this is a good sign. In very rare cases, blisters can occur. Using an experienced therapist and a top quality laser significantly reduces the chance of this happening.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Cost depends on the area treated. $50 is our minimum price, which would treat a woman’s upper lip for example. Underarms are $115.
